About John
I’m John, Assistant Director of Music at St Paul’s Juniors and former Head of Music at a leading grammar school. I hold a degree in Music and a PGCE, and have over six years’ teaching experience across clarinet, music theory, GCSE and A-Level. Many of my students have achieved top grades and progressed to Oxford as well as the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Music, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. As both a conductor and classroom teacher, I bring professional insight, clear structure, and an encouraging approach to every lesson.

My Approach - I believe lessons should be structured yet flexible, tailored to each student’s needs. I combine demonstration, guided practice, and clear feedback, with an emphasis on building both confidence and independence. For exam students, I draw directly on my experience of leading classes through GCSE and A-Level curricula, while for instrumentalists I focus on strong technique, expressive playing, and enjoyment of music. Lesson Structure - Length: Usually 1 hour (shorter lessons available for younger learners). Content: Mix of performance, theory, and applied skills depending on the goal. Method: Encouraging, engaging, and adaptable to each student’s style of learning. Who I Teach - Clarinet: Beginners to advanced (up to Grade 8+). Piano: Beginner/junior level. Music Theory: Up to Grade 8. Academic Music: GCSE and A-Level support, including performance, composition, analysis, and exam preparation. Ages: Children, teenagers, and adults. Why Choose Me? With proven results at the very highest academic and conservatoire levels, I help students not only achieve top marks but also develop a lifelong love of music. Whether preparing for an exam, an audition, or simply learning for enjoyment, I offer a professional, supportive, and inspiring environment.
