About Jenna

Jenna Yee is a composer, sound designer, songwriter and cat lover.

Jenna uses imagery as a vital element in her music to reminisce human senses for her storytelling. She is inspired by artists like Debussy, Frank Ocean, Bill Evans and Kaytranada, which makes her music bold, organic and stimulant.

Jenna’s diverse and unique vision has greatly impacted the film industry and received exceptional reviews of her works. She recently collaborated with Sydney College of Arts on "Run Out of The Shadow (2023)" with a futuristic and synthetic touch that captures the sinister profile of the thriller. Celebrated American composer and film music researcher Phillip Johnston commented on Jenna's works, "Her music engages with the visuals on several different levels at different points. What she pulled off that is so difficult is setting a tone that is very hard to articulate yet very specific. Kudos!" She was also the lead arranger for the White Bay Power Station Collaboration with the Sydney Youth Orchestra (SYO). To pursue higher musicianship in composition, Jenna graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and studied under renowned composers such as Alison Cole, Andrew Robertson and Ivan Zavada, where she achieved high distinction for electronic production, composition and music theory subjects.

Besides her role as a composer, Jenna has a passion for music education; she is a music director at Sydney Catholic Schools and makes contemporary and jazz arrangements tailored from beginner bands to professionals to make music more accessible and enjoyable.

Her experience teaching visually impaired students inspires her research on interactive composition in the scope of education.

About the lesson

Hey there! I am Jenna and I'm not your typical music tutor. With my experience professionally composing for artists, films, TV, games and advertisements, I have a deep understanding of how to compose different styles and find your own composing voice!

Step by step, we will work through the composition stages from forming to fully developing your musical ideas. Exploring various composition techniques, musical structures and song analysis. Every composition journey is different, no matter if you want to learn how to create a song for a friend, or preparing to go professional, I can tailor the lessons to suit your needs and your artistic vision.

This is what a lesson could look like:
- Giving feedback/suggestions on your composition
- Looking into some music examples/techniques that could spark some ideas for your composition
- short composition practice on the techniques we discussed in the lesson
- notation/DAW/mixing tips and tricks and setting goals for next lesson
