About Hannah

As a teaching assistant for an introductory college biology course, I have extensive experience in one-on-one tutoring sessions. My duties also include providing Supplemental Instruction sessions for small groups and assisting in grading and lecture activities. Currently, I study psychology and biology at the University of Nebraska and will graduate in December of this year. I currently hold a 4.0 and received an A+ in challenging courses such as Fundamentals of Biology, Behavioral Neuroscience, Pscyhoneuropharmacology, and Research Methods and Data Analysis. An added bonus is that I am heavily involved in a lab in which I actually use many of the molecular and general biological techniques discussed in classes. I would be more than happy to chat with students about career goals and getting involved in research-- especially any students with a unique interest in neuroscience or molecular biology!

My main goal when working with students is to get them to a place where they would feel comfortable teaching someone else the materials. With a background and focus in subjects such as learning and motivation, cognitive psychology, and biopsychology, I am up to date on the most effective methods for studying and getting information to stick. Through the use of mnemonics, creative storytelling, and chunking, my aim is to engage students in a process called elaborative rehearsal. Rather than simply memorizing information, elaborate rehearsal encodes information through a deep exploration of the content's meaning.

Lesson plans would be tailored to fit the syllabus and individual needs of the student. However, a typical plan might include:

-Setting learning goals for each unit.
-Creating preview questions for the assigned reading for that week.
-After reading, identifying key terms and concepts and restating big ideas.
-Helping students with their assignments and creating practice quizzes based on the book and/or syllabus.
-Using a variety of techniques to help them process the information (i.e., connecting material to current events or technologies, science animation videos to help them visualize cellular processes, storytelling and analogies for remembering complex cellular processes, etc) Variety is key!
-Having them create a mock lesson plan for a unit to review for the test or having them create their own practice quizzes. Being able to present the material themselves demonstrates a high degree of knowledge and understanding.

My teaching style would be best suited for juniors and seniors in high school who are studying biology or AP biology, college students in an introductory biology course, introductory neuroscience, or psychopharmacology course. Undergraduates who are interested in biopsychology, behavioral neuroscience, or psychopharmacology would have the added benefit of being taught by someone with a solid background in a fairly specific area of study. Anyone about to graduate high school or who has recently transitioned from secondary education to an undergraduate program would benefit most. I'm confident that the methods of studying I introduce to students will prove to be just as valuable as the feedback and assistance provided for the subject matter.
