About Jay
I am a Maths and Philosophy graduate from the University of York with over five years of tutoring experience and a lifelong passion for strategy games. I’ve grown up in a family of chess players and have been playing since childhood — competing casually at school and university, where I developed my skills to an 1800 Elo level. Chess and Draughts have always been a part of my life, and I enjoy sharing that passion with others through clear, structured lessons that make strategic thinking accessible and enjoyable. My approach focuses on helping students build strong fundamentals, improve tactical awareness, and develop the patience and foresight that great players rely on. Whether a student is learning the rules for the first time or refining their opening repertoire, I adapt lessons to their ability and goals. I’ve also created a step-by-step guide that I use to support each student’s progress, making it easy to see improvement and stay motivated. I offer engaging and structured Chess and Draughts lessons for players of all levels — from complete beginners learning the basics to more experienced players looking to refine their strategy and decision-making. Each lesson is tailored to the student’s current ability and goals, whether that’s understanding openings, improving tactical awareness, or learning to think several moves ahead. As a Chess player rated around 1800 Elo, I bring a strong foundation in strategy, tactics, and game analysis. My approach focuses on developing clear strategic thinking and patience — helping students recognise patterns, anticipate opponents’ moves, and make confident decisions under pressure. I’ve also created a comprehensive guide that I go through with each student at their own pace. This guide helps structure lessons and ensures steady, consistent progress — no matter where you’re starting from. Lessons include interactive gameplay, analysis of key positions, and discussions of strategy, mindset, and improvement routines. My goal is to make Chess and Draughts both enjoyable and intellectually rewarding, while helping students build focus, discipline, and confidence in their thinking.
