About Mark
My name is Mark and I am originally from Wigan near Manchester, but now live in Birmingham. I love playing chess. It is a game like no other: it doesn't matter how big and strong you are, how young or old, or where you're from - but what your strategy is and how you move the pieces!
I used to play chess all the time, entering tournaments across the UK every month, and playing league matches every week. My peak ECF rating was 200 (converts to 2200 FIDE) and my biggest achievements are Lancashire Champion, playing for England U18s, and coming 3rd in the British Rapidplay.
Nowadays, due to family life, work commitments, and other commitments like going to church I have retired from competition, but I still enjoy coaching. I love to teach other people my secrets to success and particularly like to help my students learn to think strategically.
I would be delighted to help you achieve your chess goals.

I am an extremely experienced teacher (PGCE FET) and chess player (former Lancashire Champion, represented England U18s, 3rd place British Rapid play Championships including a win against GM Arkell).
My lessons are usually done via Zoom, but can be done face-to-face subject to arrangement. All sessions start with some puzzles or a quick game. Lessons then run on an "A/B rota". Lesson A - we go through your games and analyse your strengths and weaknesses. Then in the next lesson (B) we train specifically in an area we identified as needing development in the last lesson.
I am happy to coach students of all ages and abilities. Sessions last between 1-2 hours depending on your preference.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Perfect! We are very happy about Mark’s chess course. Mark taught my daughter chess when she thought about giving up. He let the very young age girl find confidence and fun in chess. My daughter wants to learn more from Mark, and we are very pleased.
