About Gretchen

I graduated magna cum laude from Davidson College with an honors degree in history and Phi Beta Kappa distinction. I went on to receive an M.A. and a Ph.D. in American Studies from the College of William and Mary. What I gained most from these degrees was an ability to write well and think analytically. I have taught and tutored writers of all ages and in a wide variety of fields for 25 years. I worked with the admissions office at the University of South Carolina for 10 of those years where a big part of my job was to read application essays to determine scholarship eligibility and honors placement for prospective students. My teaching jobs have been at the College of William and Mary (Williamsburg, VA), the University of Richmond (Richmond, VA), Keio University (Tokyo, Japan), Kasaoka High School (Kasaoka, Japan), and the Richland Two School District (Columbia, SC).

I was the editor for The Making of Twenty-First-Century Richmond (2024) and Liberty is Sweet: The Hidden History of the American Revolution (2021). A selected list of universities I have helped clients enter include: Stanford, USC, Boston College, UVA, Florida State, Kent State, Macalester College, Swarthmore, and UCLA.

From 1994--2001, I lived and worked in Japan. Following this, I directed a summer exchange program for Japanese students visiting the American south. Working with Japanese students both in the U.S. and in Japan trained me as an English and ESOL teacher. Currently I work with Hispanic elementary school students in a local gardening program.

I can help you with Ph.D.-level humanities, history, or cultural studies or with beginning level English-language writing and reading, and I have particular expertise in college and graduate admissions applications. I am available almost any time to review or edit your writing and research papers. I encourage you to contact me and we will see what we can do to get you on the road to great success!

I offer my services in two areas - writing and English language instruction.

For WRITING, I proof and copyedit others' work ranging from school essays to MA and PhD dissertations to full-scale books, both academic and commercial. I also edit college or graduate level admissions essays. For this work, I may meet the client only once to learn exactly what they are looking for, but the bulk of the time we work asynchronously: I edit a draft and send back to the client, the client revises and sends back to me for another round. We continue like this until we agree the work is done. My clients love my attention to detail and my ability to make their work flow smoothly and their distinct voices shine.

For ENGLISH LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION, I meet the client face-to-face always. I base my lesson plans on (1) the individual's proficiency level and (2) the individual's interests. If the aim is to improve conversational skills, for example, we will find a list of topics of interest and discuss them in depth so that my client learns all the associated vocabulary and useful expressions. I am a fun teacher and my clients always report great progress!
