About Zach
I recently completed my M.A. in Philosophy at the University of British Columbia, supported by the Canada Graduate Scholarships–Master’s Award (a $17,500 research grant) for work on structuralist approaches to mathematical ontology. My academic background is strongest in formal logic, philosophy of mathematics, and metaphysics, and I also teach and mentor in ethics, epistemology, and political philosophy. I earned my B.A. in Honors Philosophy (High Distinction) from UBC in 2021 and received several academic awards, including the James Ruggles Macdonell Memorial Scholarship. During my undergraduate studies, I also spent a semester in India studying classical Indian logic and metaphysics. For the past seven years, I’ve taught debate and philosophy professionally, coaching students to major successes in debate, Ethics Bowl, and Ethics Olympiad across North America, China, and beyond. My students have published work in journals such as JSR and IJHSR, earned numerous shortlists at the John Locke Essay Competition, won two gold medals in the Harvard International Review essay contest, and won national level International Philosophy Olympiad Essay competitions. I’m also the co-founder of Modus Ponens Institute, a private education company focused on philosophy and debate. Outside of teaching, I’m usually skiing, mountaineering, or reading science fiction.

My approach is structured, efficient, and highly individualized. I work best with students when we treat writing as a skill with repeatable components: a clear thesis, a logical structure, strong reasons and evidence, and clean, precise prose. I teach concrete techniques for brainstorming, outlining, argument-building, paragraph structure, and revision, and I give targeted feedback so you always know exactly what to fix next.
A typical lesson depends on where you are in the process. Early on, we clarify the prompt, choose a viable topic, and build an outline with a clear central claim and supporting arguments. Midway, we focus on drafting and improving clarity, structure, and use of sources. Later sessions are revision-focused: tightening the thesis, strengthening reasoning, improving transitions, and polishing style and citations. Between meetings, I often support students through asynchronous review, returning actionable comments on outlines and drafts so progress continues outside of sessions.
What sets me apart is a combination of academic training and a long track record of results. I completed an M.A. in Philosophy at UBC (Canada Graduate Scholarships–Master’s Award) and have spent seven years coaching argumentation professionally. My students have earned numerous shortlists at the John Locke Essay Competition, won two gold medals in the Harvard International Review essay contest, won gold medals in the International Philosophy Olympiad, and published in journals such as JSR and IJHSR. I have also helped university students in philosophy, psychology, English, and political science produce clearer, more rigorous, higher-scoring papers.
Lessons are for motivated high school and university students who want serious improvement in analytic writing. I coach course essays, university applications that require strong argumentative writing, and competitive submissions, including philosophy, political theory, ethics, and research-style essays. If you share your prompt, rubric, and deadline, I will propose a concrete plan and we can get started right away.

I first hired Zach for help in a course on Formal Logic, and thanks to him I was able to gain a solid understanding of the core concepts and completely turn my grades around. Afterwards, I hired him for several other courses. I found throughout those courses that Zach is generally very knowledgeable, and on the rare occasions that he encounters an unfamiliar subject he is quite good at gaining an understanding of it in a short time.
I have been taking weekly philosophy/essay classes with Zach for the past few months, and he has been absolutely amazing. He always comes to classes on time, prepares thoroughly, and structures each class very effectively. His passion and love for the subject blends through every class, and I have also learned to enjoy philosophy/essay writing thanks to his dedication. You cannot ask for a better teacher/person than Zach and I am so grateful for everything he has done for me. Highly recommended for any student with interest in essay writing or philosophy.
Zach was super helpful in assisting me with formal logic. Wouldn’t have gotten my grade without him! Was very knowledgeable and flexible with scheduling.
Zach tutored me in a symbolic logic class and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without him! He was a very thorough and patient teacher and I highly recommend working with Zach if you are looking for some support in a philosophy class.
Passionate and knows very well about the subject he's talking about, and very helpful in my political theory work!
Zach is a very flexible, accommodating teacher with unique insight into approaching complex topics. He’s a pleasure to work with and understands what it takes to be a teacher.
