About Fiona
While studying for my Master's degree and doctorate, I taught undergraduates in classes and one-to-one and after leaving university I kept up my teaching skills by home tutoring for a few years. In full-time employment I have not had the chance to keep up with tutoring, but training others has been a constant and enjoyable part of my jobs. Now that my circumstances allow me to jump back into the world of tutoring, I hope to use all my experience and academic skills to help ignite enthusiasm and confidence in many more students.
I have been teaching since my A-Level days, when I volunteered on a reading booster program for year-7 pupils. My first student was an extremely lively boy who had no real problem with reading except that he couldn't sit still and couldn't stand the age-appropriate reading-scheme fiction books he was being offered. Once I allowed him to pick a book that he wanted to read - an adult book on fishing, his passion - and used firmness leavened with humour to enforce some discipline, his reading improved in leaps and bounds. My second pupil was an extremely withdrawn girl. She found reading a real challenge and her confidence was at rock-bottom. It took a gentle, quiet, encouraging approach to help her to engage with reading and start to see herself as someone who could succeed at school.
These early experiences ignited my love for teaching and taught me a crucial fact: before you can teach anyone anything you must understand what is holding them back and address that issue. Sticking rigidly to a plan will not help those pupils who are struggling; listening, empathy and tailoring lessons to the individuals' weaknesses and strengths are key to giving students the confidence, enthusiasm and skills needed to reach their goals.
