About Hugh
I am a highly committed and creative tutor with over a decade of experience working in various educational contexts. I have tutored a range of subjects (chiefly English, Drama and History) and have honed my approach through working with individuals of all different abilities and backgrounds. Having tutored independently and worked in several schools for a number of years I am well acquainted with an ever-evolving curriculum. I have experience teaching Key Stages 2, 3 and 4, and AS and A-Levels, and have helped prepare students for UCAS applications. I have also supported individuals through their 7+, 8+, 11+ and Oxbridge examinations. I have worked as a SEN Teaching Assistant (2014 - 2016), providing one-to-one support for pupils with Special Education Needs at two separate primary schools - West Hill and Christ Church Primary. Here I developed a child-centred approach to teaching, focusing on creative strategies for learning. I have also worked as an Outreach Teacher for The Complete Works (2016 - 2017) which specialises in re-engaging young people who aren't in mainstream education. In this role I worked one-to-one with a number of young people and enjoyed merging my arts interests with my teaching experience. I followed the National Curriculum, and varied my teaching style from child to child (sometimes we would be working towards a GCSE, other times it would be more about re-establishing learning in core subjects). When I first start working with a new client I make sure I have a firm understanding about the needs and concerns of the tutee and the tutee's parents or guardians and structure my lessons accordingly. What gaps need to be filled? What areas can I expand upon that the tutee might not have had the time to focus on at school? Are there any overarching problems that need addressing? Taking these questions into consideration I always make sure I am complementing rather than contradicting what is taught at school. Throughout my sessions I remain considerate and understanding, maintaining a firm belief that any problems with work can be overcome with perseverance. I aim to lead fun as well as engaging sessions. The last thing I want is for my tutee to feel disengaged and I try hard to keep them excited and enlivened throughout. This might mean shaking things up and trying new ways of working if needs be. My sessions are brilliant opportunities to delve further into aspects of work that might have been missed in the classroom, to extend a tutee's knowledge in something that they are particularly interested in, to help with examination preparation and also to hopefully inspire and have fun.
