About Philip
I have a Ph.D. in English and extensive training and experience in teaching and tutoring for composition and literature courses. In addition to teaching at Northwestern University, I have tutored with other reputable college admissions and tutoring companies. Aside from my skills and experience, I am a warm, encouraging tutor who meets each student where they are. When I am not teaching, researching, and tutoring, I like to spend time in the outdoors gardening, swimming, and hiking.

My tutoring is student-centric and aimed at making you a clearer, more confident writer and critical thinker over time. I believe good writing is a process, not a product. While we can focus on grammar, spelling, and sentence-level skills, our lessons will mainly focus on sharpening big-picture, high-level skills like organization, using evidence to make an argument, and crafting compelling narratives. I help high school, college, and graduate students with argumentative essays, literary analysis, admissions essays, and other genres of writing.
