About Georgina

I have been a tutor for about eight years, either as a one-to-one tutor in a school, or working for a tutoring agency. I have taught around fifty individual pupils, and also groups of school pupils. Most pupils have needed intervention tutoring, and most of them improved their levels. I started teaching GCSE pupils this year and do not yet have any results. Most of them improved their level in class work.

About the lesson

I have tutored in English and literacy for several years to primary and secondary pupils. I teach in their homes, schools and libraries. I build up a good rapport with my pupils, so they can trust my teaching to help them succeed.

I teach up to GCSE level and have a friendly approach but am clear about the need to put in effort, and concentration to gain from the work we do in lessons. I try to build up the confidence of my pupils, by assessing their learning style, and then tailoring the lesson to help them to play to their strengths. Most of the pupils I teach have specific challenges that require more attention than other areas, so we concentrate on them. For instance, needing help with planning an essay, or perhaps learning to improve their writing style, or fleshing out their response to a written task.

I begin with a short revision of work done last time and give the pupil an opportunity to mention any problems or difficulties they have with the work. I follow a curriculum suited to their key stage, but adapted to the level they work at. For younger pupils I vary the tasks quite frequently to keep their concentration and interest going. Secondary pupils have longer, more detailed tasks to do, but often lack concentration and some need a more varied programme.
Most pupils need to work on their spelling and grammar (Spag) as that seems to be a general problem, and I always spend some time in the lesson on this area.
Other areas I concentrate on are comprehension of fiction/non fiction texts, analysis of usage of language and literary devices (GCSE). I show methods of how to tackle exam questions, and how to use exam time to your advantage.
We tackle a new task by looking at the work involved, discussing what the pupil knows already, and showing what they can do. I then usually show them how I would tackle it, and ask them to try that method. The task is then attempted, and this can be quite a slow process until the pupil shows they understand better what is asked of them. I may then give some homework on this subject, which then follows through to the next lesson. Obviously all pupils work at their own pace, and success can be slow to achieve for a while.
This is an overview of my methodology, showing the usual way I work, although I will adapt it suit the differing personalities and skills of my pupils some of whom can be quite challenging.
