About Callum
I am a soon-to-be qualified teacher with extensive experience in secondary school education, and I hold a master's degree (distinction) in Modern and Contemporary Writing.
I try to tailor my teaching to the specific needs of each student; after all, each student is different. That being said, I prefer to take a more conversational approach to learning wherever possible, as I firmly believe that discussing literature and exchanging ideas is the fastest way to develop one's ability in English (my methodology here is heavily influenced by the Cognitive Acceleration program developed by Shayer and Adey at King's College London). By happy coincidence, it also happens to be one of the most exhilarating and rewarding aspects of the subject by far!
Beyond this, I place a strong emphasis on the importance of context in understanding any text, literary or otherwise, together with close-reading and inference. Mastery of these three elements is essential to success in English, and I try to structure my classes to provide ample opportunity to practice each of them.
