About Helen
I have over 20 years of experience teaching in public schools. Having taught Pre-K, second grade, fourth grade, and seventh grade English/Language arts; I am well versed in many different learning styles and teaching techniques. I am passionate about all areas of literacy, and love helping a student be successful in their learning. I have a degree in early childhood education, and have tutored students in all areas of literacy.

My approach to tutoring is quite simple. I determine the student's strengths and weaknesses in the subject, and I meet them where they are. I am a firm believer in having a solid understanding of the basics of phonics, comprehension strategies, vocabulary, and grammar in order to be a strong reader. Writing goes hand in hand with this. One cannot be a strong writer if they are not a strong reader. I tutor elementary students, middle school students, and high school students. I can also do reading remediation for any age. A typical lesson would include a review of the previous lessons to make sure that the material has been internalized. I spiral previous learning so that skills are used continually. I assess informally and formally through the use of quizzes, games, and formal tests with multiple choice, short answer, extended constructed response, and other questioning techniques. I am very patient, and understanding of different learning styles. My philosophy is that everyone can learn to read.
