About Robert
Please note that I offer online teaching, through detailed assessment of written work and through Skype conversations, but I do not currently offer in-person tuition. Please contact me before attempting to book a time through this site. *** I am an author and publisher of award-winning Maths and English books, a school teacher and a tutor. My books are available on Amazon, from the RSL Educational Ltd website, and in bookshops. I have a First Class honours degree in English from Oxford and 5 A grades at A-level (including triple Maths). I was a postgraduate student at the Royal Academy of Music. I started working as a tutor over a decade ago, shortly after leaving university. Since then I have taught hundreds of people (aged from five to sixty), in England, Italy and Hong Kong. I have extensive experience of teaching English and History to A level, as well as Maths to GCSE. I have particular expertise in independent school 11+ and 13+ Maths and English exams. I work with pupils of all academic levels, including the gifted (my Oxbridge applicants, who in many cases had failed before, have been very successful) and those who struggle. I have taught many pupils with special educational needs. The great majority of my Common Entrance Maths and English pupils have gained places at their chosen school. Their offers have included St Paul's, Westminster, City of London, Latymer, Sevenoaks, Christ's Hospital and Uppingham. I have prepared pupils for pre-tests at a range of schools, including Eton and St Paul's. When I lived in Hong Kong I helped many Chinese students with their applications for schools and universities in the UK and America. I was a History teacher at Christ's Hospital from 2009-10. These are some of my educational principles: - I always praise achievement and I encourage my pupils whenever it is appropriate, but I am also honest. Children have more respect for adults who are authentic than for those who are relentlessly chirpy. - I often complete the same work as the student, working alongside them, so that they are able to see what they are aiming for. - I maintain good-quality communication with parents, in person or by email, to ensure that we are working together. I reply to emails as quickly as possible. - I try to establish clear long-term goals that are in the pupil's power (i.e. not relative to others' success). - Once long-term goals are clear, I put them to one side and focus on the short term. My expectation is simply that each piece of work should be a little better than the previous one. - I maintain a balance between focused study and review/overview, and I return to the most basic elements of a subject as often as is necessary. Perfect! Incisive, efficient - and kind
Rob swiftly identified how my son could progress in GCSE English Language and Maths. His caring and skilful approach improved not only my son's understanding of those subjects, but also his confidence - and in just a few weeks. We are now awaiting results but already plan to book Rob again for help with other subjects.
Outcome : Greatly improved understanding and confidence. Exam results awaited.See more reviews
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
This is to say that Robert is a very reliable and trustworthy person. He is tutoring my son and preparing him for the 11+ exams and for the 13+ pre-selections for very selective schools. He has prepared my older son for the same target and made him to pass all his exams, in fact he got a place in St Paul's School, Westminster, Kings college, City of London and Latymer. Robert is always very punctual, very committed and he has a good sense of humour. The boys really enjoy having lessons with him.
