About Sarah
I am a DBS-checked English Literature PhD student at University College London. I studied at the University of Cambridge for four years during which time I completed a BA in English Literature and an MPhil in Modern and Contemporary Literature. I have studied works of English and American Literature ranging from 1500 to present day. I am interested in all things interdisciplinary and have specialised in an array of subjects such as the poetry of women writers, jigsaws in the works of Charles Dickens, the management of time on Shakespeare’s stage, and literary choreography in the work of Anne Carson. The breadth of my learning helps me to engage students who are already interested in the student but also those who find little interest in their subjects.
I have a passion for teaching, learning and helping students to increase their grades and their confidence so they can strive towards their goals.
My tutoring methods help to raise the aspirations, confidence and grades of the students I teach. I have helped GCSE students to raise their grades from a 4 to a 9, and have helped 11+ students increase their scores from 60% to 90%, and I have guided students through the Oxbridge application process. The increase in competence that my students enjoy is matched by an increase in their confidence and in their interest in the subject, which is particularly rewarding to see as a tutor.
Beyond my part-time work as a private tutor, I have also been employed by UCL to teach undergraduates Literature students.

Whether for KS3, 11+, GCSE, A-Level or Oxbridge students my one hour tutorials are focussed and varied while the content, style and pace are respond to their specific needs. I have found that striving to keep learning relaxed and exiting ensures the most effective and rewarding progress for students but I also appreciate that knowing how you are doing allows you, the student, to stay relaxed. For this reason, I will measure our progress through practice answers, speedy knowledge checks, or a short chat at the end of a session so you can let me know how things are going from your side of things. The worksheets, exercises and teaching resources I share with my students are tailored to their individual needs and designed to help them succeed.
When I meet a new student, I like to get to know their interests and aspirations as well as the logistical information regarding exam boards, learning methods, current attainment, and areas of difficulty. By doing this I can create a timeline of sessions that we can work through together but it also allows me to create a scheme of learning with a pace and focus that is just right for you. This might mean working together to create a body of revision materials, collate quotations or facts for upcoming exams but it could also mean finding ways to perfect your essay techniques or understanding paragraph structure – all of which will be integral to your success at both GCSE and A-Level.
If you have a query, or a question about the ages of students I am happy to teach, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
