About Ambrose
My name is Ambrose and I am an English Literature graduate from The University of York, about to begin a Masters in Modern and Contemporary Literature and Culture.
At A Level I achieved an A* in English Literature, an A* in Film Studies and an A in Psychology.
English Literature does not have to start and end with Shakespeare, and that is why I am a firm believer in meeting students where they're at. Students can learn just as much about literary and rhetorical criticism analysing Stephen King as they can analysing Percy Shelley. This is why I like to balance teaching of the assigned syllabus with essay practice tailored to a students individual literary interests. I believe that any student can get good marks and have fun doing it. I am experienced in tutoring, having worked with The Access Project Alumni mentoring scheme and with my Sixth-form college's peer mentoring group for the past 4 years.
I also offer mentoring for university applications and CVs.
First session is free :)

GCSE + A Level Tutoring:
The best (and most challenging) thing about English and Film studies is that there is no right answer. While this may make the path to an A* daunting, the aim of my tutoring is to change the way a student thinks so that writing the perfect essay is second nature. My sessions focus on the practical aspects of essay writing, using real top-mark essay examples and reverse-engineering them to help students understand how to reach every target in the marking criteria. I also select extracts for my students to help them come to grips with unseen poetry and prose exams. From my own experience studying English Literature (A*) and Film Studies (A*) at A Level, I know hardest part of an essay based subject is understanding what the examiners want from you and that is what I aim to resolve in my tutoring.
University Applicants:
UCAS season is fast approaching, which means that it is time to begin thinking about personal statements and the stress of applications. The process may seem daunting, especially if you want to apply for Oxbridge or a Russell Group institution. I offer mentoring on the UCAS application process and personal statement writing, helping students get into the top universities.
