Whether preparing for GCSEs, tackling A-Level coursework, writing a university dissertation, or developing advanced English language proficiency (ESL/EFL), my goal is simple: to help you find your voice, think critically, and communicate with precision.
My teaching focuses on three main principles:
We don’t just read summaries or memorise someone else’s interpretations. In literary study, we examine how language, form, and historical context actually function together. For language learners, we focus on real-world communicative competence — learning how words, collocations, and idioms behave in natural contexts rather than relying on dry grammar drills.
Most students know what they want to say, but lose marks on how they say it. I break down essay planning, paragraph architecture, and comparative analysis into clear, repeatable habits. We look closely at thesis formulation, nuanced evaluation, and avoiding fluff.
Every session includes constructive, real-time feedback. Between sessions, you will always know exactly what to draft, edit, or read next, with tailored notes and actionable targets.
Typical Lesson Structure and Length
Duration: Standard lessons are 60 minutes, which allows enough time to check in, dig deeply into a text or writing sample, and build an essay plan or tackle targeted exercises. For intensive essay clinics, dissertations, or A-Level coursework reviews, 90-minute sessions are also available.
Format:
First 5–10 mins: Reviewing previous feedback, checking independent work, and establishing today's target outcome.
Main 35–40 mins: Close textual analysis, guided writing, or deconstructing difficult themes/concepts through interactive discussion.
Final 10–15 mins: Consolidating key takeaways, setting clear writing/reading tasks, and addressing any lingering questions.
Qualifications and Experience
Academic Background: First Class English Literature Graduate from Durham University
Teaching Credentials: Fully certified TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) tutor with formal training in lesson staging, error correction, and communicative language teaching.
Tutoring Experience: Extensive one-to-one coaching experience spanning GCSE English Literature/Language, A-Level coursework and exam technique, and advanced conversational English for international students and professionals. My coaching background outside the classroom also informs how I break down complex technical skills into manageable, confidence-building steps.
