About Andy
I was a biology student and soccer player in college who chose a life of adventure instead of one specific career. My focus has been on ecological restoration, outdoor experiential learning, and community development. I have worked in very diverse locations with very diverse people, from Beverly Hills, to Ghana, to Uganda, to the Caribbean, and now the mountains of North Carolina. Across each of these settings I have enjoyed bonding with the people unique to that place, and my approach to education has evolved toward finding mutual exchanges of information and interest. I have seen deep and comprehensive intellectual growth occur far beyond the bounds of traditional academic settings, and I believe this has to do with the humanity and curiosity within a student/teacher relationship rather than merely the level of expertise of the instructor. I expect that even though one of us is the tutor and the other is the student, both of us will learn and both of us will grow.

My teaching method begins with getting to know the student by focusing on their unique curiosities and goals. Lessons are designed to meet and expand around these interests and learning styles. I believe a detailed connection to where the individual student is in their development determines the shape of the lessons and of our conversations. The form of the practices are a mutual creation, determined as much by the personality of the student as by me.
I have a broad range of teaching experiences to draw from, ranging from formal high school and museum based science teaching, to experiential outdoor camps and workshops, to rural, third world community development projects, to coaching in tropical resorts.
This approach can be ideal for students of any age, especially those who are interested in exploration and fun.
