About Courtney

Hi there! My name is Courtney, and I teach/tutor at the elementary school through college level. I'm excited to get to know you, but first, here's a little about me! I've been teaching and tutoring since 2006. I began this journey as a writing center tutor where I attended college in Northeast Ohio. After I obtained my B.A. in Professional Writing and Editing, I was offered a full, academic scholarship to obtain an M.A. in English with a focus in teaching writing. I obtained that degree in 2010, and I've been an educator ever since. I've spent most of my career as an English Professor at state universities, community colleges, and technical schools. Recently, I obtained a private education teaching license from the state of Ohio, and I now work as a Title 1 teacher/tutor with struggling readers/writers at the elementary level. When I'm not teaching, I enjoy running, reading, and sipping a hot cup of tea. I can't wait to get to know you!

About the lesson

As someone who holds a graduate certificate in teaching writing, my teaching methods and philosophy reflect my belief that the writing teacher is there to guide, not to tell/correct. My goal is to help students become independent writers, and that means they must learn to recognize revision opportunities in their own writing, with or without a tutor/teacher. My goal is to help students establish a close relationship with their writing voice and style, so that they are able to independently revise.

My tutoring background is unique as I've tutored and taught grades 1-higher education. For fifteen years, I've taught and tutored writing in high education. As of 2024, I continue this role, and I also work as a Title 1 Teacher in grades 1-7 in the private school sector. It's safe to say I am well-rounded! My experience allows me to meet students where they are and build from there, no matter their level.

Speaking of meeting students where they are, a typical lesson with me models that approach. I begin by surveying where students are in their writing process (are they struggling to understand the prompt? Come up with more examples? Edit/proofread?). We then have a brief discussion about how students learn best and tailor the lesson from there ; for example, I will provide my visual learners with web maps and other informal outlines to help them draft.

As someone with a graduate degree and experience in elementary through college, I am happy to tutor first graders - adults! My experience in the elementary, college, and technical school settings gives me a wide range of teaching approaches and abilities so I can best assist your learner.
