About Penny
About Me
Hi! I’m a South African writer, educator, facilitator and storyteller, and I genuinely love working with people and ideas.
A large part of my professional life has involved communicating complex or challenging ideas in ways that make them accessible, engaging and memorable. I write, teach, facilitate discussions, host live conversations and panels, and create stories for different audiences.
I’m particularly interested in the relationship between language and thought: how the words we choose shape an argument, tell a story, persuade an audience and ultimately allow us to express who we are.
I’ve also spent years working with people from different continents, with very different backgrounds and adapting the way I communicate depending on who is in front of me. That has taught me that there isn’t one perfect way to learn. Good teaching starts with paying attention to the person you’re actually teaching.
I’m curious by nature, so our lessons can go in some wonderfully interesting directions. I love discussing books, art, culture, philosophy, current affairs, geo politics storytelling and the strange questions that make us stop and think.
Most importantly, I want my students to leave our lessons feeling more capable than when they arrived.
Whether you’re trying to become more fluent in English, prepare for a presentation, develop your writing, strengthen an argument or simply become more confident expressing yourself, I’m here to help you find the words and the confidence to use them.
And yes, I promise we’ll have fun along the way.

About Your Lessons
My lessons are built around one simple idea: you learn to communicate by communicating.
Whether you’re working on English, oral expression, public speaking, rhetoric or creative writing, our lessons will be practical, conversational and tailored to what you actually want to achieve.
We might have a conversation about a topic you’re passionate about, analyse an argument, practise a presentation, prepare for an interview, workshop something you’ve written, debate an idea, or work through the language you need to express yourself more naturally.
I’ll help you develop your vocabulary, grammar, fluency and pronunciation, but we’ll also work on the skills that allow you to communicate with confidence: structuring your thoughts, telling a compelling story, making an argument, thinking on your feet and finding your own voice.
I don’t believe mistakes should make you afraid to speak. They are part of the learning process. My job is to create a relaxed environment where you can experiment, ask questions, make mistakes and gradually become more confident.
Every lesson is adapted to the individual student. Some people need structure and detailed correction. Others need encouragement to speak more freely. Some want to prepare for a specific goal, while others simply want to become better communicators.
We’ll figure out what works for you.
