About Bryan

Besides teaching English (ESL and English for testing), which I openly admit I stumbled into when I first ventured to Southeast Asia in 2012 to lecture in sports for my alma mater, I have been lucky enough to have shared many moments in sports (I have been to and worked the last three Winter Olympic Games), and of course, I brought along my own experiences as a high-level athlete of the past. When I first began my journey in China at a primary school, I thought that if I taught children 'words' in English, they could eventually speak English, but I soon realized that the energy and understanding was different when viewed from a native speaker's background, that students could learn words, but not context and understanding, and I chose to grow myself into a more complete teacher that doesn't overwhelm students but rather inspires courage, confidence, and eventually growth and understanding. Before coming to Asia, I was a successful sports coach and PE teacher in the U.S., so through my own studies, I grew to understand that I can teach and coach my students to aspire to more than just completing a course or test in English, and that they can utilize their base of understanding by focusing their own strengths and interests for growth that is both measurable and confidence-building for their future. As a student myself many years ago, I had my own struggles, in math and just in the desire to study and learn, but as I got older, I learned to channel what I loved about learning, in music, sports, history and cultures, into the building blocks of an education that could inspire and help others. As an older teacher, a parent and grandparent myself, I bring the wealth of helping raise my children, inspiring each individually (because my kids are very different from each other) and watching them succeed along their chosen paths. I have over 20 years of experience on the sports fields, and in the classroom, where my expectations of each student, mirrors themselves, and the real world.

About the lesson

As a veteran teacher and native speaker from the United States, with a strong academic background, I prefer to know and understand my students individually, their habits, hobbies and interests, to craft my lessons to meet each student at an individual level so that we develop a basis of understanding that leads to growth so students can help us both create a pathway for success in academia and testing in English. I work with all parts of the language through shared histories, cultures and ideas to bridge speaking and/or writing with listening and understanding a broad language that has subtle differences even among shared countries. My lessons will focus on the student(s) and not the teacher, broadening a student's understanding of the language through our similarities and differences. Having spent 10 years in China teaching ESL (and other subjects), I have come to understand that most students can learn English words, but very few are able to craft that into context and understanding to improve their confidence and boost their test scores for those that dream of an education that not only benefits themselves, but also their families and peers in so many different ways. I prefer to work with students focused on the bigger pictures of success, those that dream of a worldly education and aspire to be more than just an ESL student. I have worked with all levels of students, from beginners (primary students) with little understanding, to those that plan to attend school abroad and compete in the ever-demanding worlds we face today. I enjoy working with children and students eager to learn, but I also work well with older students by helping them craft their dreams into realities, in high school, university, or the working world. I've been fortunate along the way to have shared many of my past students' dreams and accomplishments, and along the way, I grew to understand that what sets each student apart, beyond those dreams and aspirations, is that each is their own person with their own study habits, but most importantly, each has interests that are different from the next student.
