About Setareh

Hello! My name is Setareh, but I go by Tara. I’m a licensed civil engineer with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo and over seven years of professional experience working as a structural engineer.

Most recently, I worked as a structural team lead at an engineering software company, where I helped develop and oversee calculation tools used by structural engineers at all experience levels. My work has involved applying mathematics daily in real-world contexts — from understanding theory to ensuring accurate, reliable implementation in practice. Through this experience, I’ve developed a strong ability to break down complex concepts and explain them clearly and logically in a way that is accessible to learners at different levels.

Alongside my engineering career, I have over 2 years of experience tutoring math to students between the ages of 7 and 18. I teach in both English and Farsi, and I tailor my approach to each student’s learning style, pace, and academic goals. I strongly believe that math can be both enjoyable and rewarding once it is properly understood, with patience, practice, and the right explanations.

My tutoring focuses on helping students truly understand concepts rather than relying on memorization. I pay close attention to details, prepare students thoroughly for exams, and teach strong problem-solving skills so they can work independently over time. My goal is to create a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and steadily building confidence and skill.

About the lesson

My lessons are designed to be personalized, structured, and goal-oriented. I believe the best learning happens when we first take the time to understand how a student learns and what they need support with.

The first lesson is always a discovery session. During this time, we get to know each other and discuss the student’s learning style, communication preferences, and what teaching approach works best for them. We also go over time availability, preferred platforms, and how the student usually studies and absorbs new material.

Next, we review the student’s coursework and curriculum together. We identify areas they would like to improve, topics they find challenging, and where they feel confident. If a student isn’t sure yet what they need help with, that’s completely okay — we figure it out together. We also take note of important dates such as exams, quizzes, assignment deadlines, and class schedules so nothing comes as a surprise.

After the first session, I create a clear and realistic study plan outlining how we’ll work together and how to make the best use of our lesson time. This plan helps keep sessions focused, efficient, and aligned with the student’s academic goals.

For me, every lesson is an opportunity to improve and adapt. As we work together, we continuously refine how we communicate and what support the student needs most. My goal is to create a collaborative learning experience where students feel supported, understood, and confident in their progress.
