About Emma

Hello, my name is Emma and I study Design Engineering at Imperial College London. My course unique as we get to learn a range of Engineering disciplines and also to develop our creative skills. I love maths and physics and I also have a passion for art and design. Bringinng these two worlds together makes for really exciting and innovative projects.

I was lucky enough to live in Belgium for four years so I have an advanced level of French. I had to learn the language quickly to keep up with my fluent classmates, so I learned a lot from the unique teaching methods at my school I also speak Italian.

I did the European Baccalaureate at school which meant in my final year I studied and was graded in 12 subjects. This meant I had to organise myself well in order to keep up with the work load and maintain a good grade average. I also took a gap year and worked at an Aerospace Engineering company which was beneficial to my personal statement when applying for universities.

These experiences and my personality mean I have a professional and organised approach to work, and I have many tips and tricks to pass on to other students. I also have two years experience tutoring maths and languages to students of a range of ages.

Everyone learns in different ways so I try to cater to that in my teaching. I often bring a range of materials to the lesson so the student can choose the method that speaks to them. I like to make sure the student understand the context of the question fully before moving onto deepening their knowledge. I find this works a lot better when it comes to exams than just learning how to answer a question.

I learn maths through doing problems. Observing how the child approaches a question and answering queries along the way highlights where the knowledge is lacking quickly so we can get through as many problems as we can through the lesson. Working through problems until the child is comfortable with the topic is one of the best ways to ensure the knowledge stays with them through to exam time.
