About Andrew
I have tutored for 12 years online (since September 2014), and my background is in mechanical engineering. I went to University of Pennsylvania for my bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. My Ph.D. was in computational fluid mechanics, and I finished it in 2008.
Since I graduated, my research interests have switched to cultural heritage imaging, using special types of digital photography (multispectral photos, infrared and ultraviolet photos, 3D imaging by photogrammetry) to document hidden information in historical artifacts. In particular I have developed a method for reading faded and crumbling gravestones using photogrammetry.

I teach student engineers to solve problems by coaching and example. At the end of the day, if a student can solve problems correctly and explain their work, they can get a good grade in engineering classes. My students range from late high school to graduate students. Typically I start by asking what you need help with, and then we try to find problems that involve those concepts. If you don't know how to begin, I demonstrate an example and explain in detail how I'm thinking about the problem, and then we do a similar problem and you tell me what to do. If we start to drift off course, I give hints. Then afterwards we discuss which things need work and what went well. I try to make lessons feel light and not tense, since anxiety is bad for solving problems!
