About Ralph

Background: I am a Graduate Masters student majoring in chemical engineering at McGill University- one of the highest ranking universities globally. I have achieved a grade 'A' (4.0 GPA) in every math course that pertains to my degree. This includes: 'Linear Algebra & Geometry', 'Advanced Calculus' and 'Ordinary Differential Equations'. Prior to my time at university, my journey in advanced mathematics began in high school. There, I completed my GCSEs and A-levels, in which I achieved 11A*s and 3As, respectively. I have always loved solving problems and puzzles as a kid. As I grew older, this love deepened. Hence, I began to turn to the world of math to fill this desire. The more I practiced and the more problems I solved, the wider my skillset became. However, this grasp of mathematics did not necessarily follow a linear path. At times, math was frustrating. But, I continued to work through and prevailed. I have now reached a point in my life in which I would like to give back to students that were formerly in my position. I'd like to help students currently struggling in mathematics- to instruct them and ultimately show them that 'math isn't so bad after all'.

With regards to the manner in which I teach, I look to follow a methodical approach at instructing my students.

A typical lesson plan includes...
-Overview of the mathematical concept (possible derivations of key governing equations; background; applications)
-A worked example of the type of problem you may face (related to each topic)
-Going through exercise problems (observing the differences between questions; examining different approaches at solving the same problem; examining common mistakes and finding ways to avoid them)
-A short summary of the key concept learnt in the lesson

These lessons are targeted towards high school students doing Math as part of their curriculum. For example, students involved in GCSE mathematics, A-level Mathematics, IB Math etc.

There are plenty of tutors in this field... so you may be questioning, why choose me as your tutor?
- Relatability: I was exactly in your situation not too long ago. I achieved 11A*s at GCSE (one of which being mathematics) and a grade A in Math at A-levels. At times, I had to teach myself concepts due to the imperfect teaching skills by former professors (that often did not follow a systematic approach of teaching). Math professors nowadays are so caught up with research and advanced work that they tend to forget how to apply the basics and adapt to a student's needs. Thus, I can provide the friendly, systematic approach that is needed to understand concepts in mathematics.
-I am extremely patient when it comes to tutoring. I know, from experience, that math can be frustrating at times. I plan to make these lessons fun and enjoyable, and to provide a new outlook on math as a whole.
