About Sheryl

Over the course of my life as an educator, I have been fortunate to interact with scholars from birth to adulthood. My mother tells me that I was born a teacher. As the eldest child in my family, my three siblings were my first students. I was not their favorite teacher because I prioritized reading over Saturday morning cartoons. Homework took precedence over childhood tomfoolery. Much to her dismay, for 24 years, my daughter suffered the same fate for which she is now grateful. Under my guidance and commitment to modeling excellence, I am proud to note that all of my siblings and my daughter graduated with their high school diplomas. My brother, who often complained about my restrictive rules, graduated as valedictorian of his class. My daughter graduated as salutatorian of her class. I am even more proud to acknowledge my role in the achievements of many of my scholars who graduated with their high school diplomas and/or transitioned from Special Education settings into jobs that led to financial independence. I never allow my students to lower themselves to fit anyone’s preconceived notions of them. They are not disabled; they are differently abled. I always encourage them to try harder. My favorite phrases are “Do better than your best” and “Show me better than you can tell me.” My impact as an educator can best be described by one of my former supervisors in his recorded evaluation of my pedagogical skills. After a classroom visit with principals from other schools, Mr. DeGennaro wrote, “The principals were impressed with what they saw in your classroom because they were able to glimpse what was already known to me, this profession is a perfect fit for you. The people who benefit most are your students. I love your approach to teaching because I feel that the students do not even realize that they are learning when you are teaching.”

My teaching career has been governed by Albert Einstein's quote, "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." I chose to become a Special Education teacher because I wanted to prove to my scholars that they can learn anything in their own time and in their own way. My methods and techniques challenge them to see their connection to lessons beyond the classroom. Typically, I integrate the 5 senses into my lesson plans. A concept/word/phrase should not be learned through rote memorization; this way of teaching limits the scope of a learner's skills. Instead, scholars should experience a lesson with their whole being thereby gaining a deeper awareness of the importance of the lesson; this makes the lesson unforgettable. My young scholars often complained that I treated them like they were in college. This is the greatest compliment I have ever received. My lessons are for scholars who want to experience the joy of learning something that they can share with the world.
