Having spent decades exploring diverse styles, I guide students through the foundational principles of color theory, composition, and brushwork while encouraging them to experiment and break traditional boundaries. I teach oil painting by stripping away the intimidation and focusing on practical, step-by-step techniques that anyone can master. We start with the absolute essentials—understanding your brushes, basic mediums, and the golden "fat over lean" rule—before blocking in simple shapes using a very limited color palette. By restricting color choices early on, students can focus entirely on mastering light, shadow, and composition without feeling overwhelmed by complex mixing. From there, I guide them through building layers and adding texture at their own pace, ensuring they leave not just with a finished canvas, but with the practical confidence and foundational skills to continue painting on their own.
