In my lessons, I help students recognize and remember Chinese characters through stories. Storytelling makes learning more interesting and helps students remember characters more easily. If the story method is not effective for a student, I will also use actions or gestures to help them understand and remember better.
I make sure students can remember the pronunciation of the characters first before explaining the meaning. I do not use dictation very often, especially for younger children, because their hand muscles are still developing and excessive writing may not be suitable for them.
My lesson usually follows three steps:
Teach new or unfamiliar characters using storytelling so students can remember them.
Review the characters and read the text together. If time allows, we will do some practice exercises.
After finishing the exercises, we review the characters learned in the lesson again to reinforce memory.
