About Tristan
I’m Tristan, an ECF-registered Class A chess player with over 20 years’ experience playing and teaching chess. Alongside tutoring, I work full time as a Strategy Director for a FTSE 250 company, bringing a clear, structured, and goal-focused approach to my lessons. I have taught chess both in schools and one-to-one, working with students from complete beginners to around 1400 FIDE. I’m fully DBS-checked and experienced in supporting young learners in a safe, encouraging environment. My own chess highlights include representing the UK Armed Forces in international NATO chess tournaments and playing county chess for Hampshire. I use modern online classroom tools to make lessons engaging and effective. I’m also a parent myself, with two young daughters who both enjoy playing chess, which helps me relate well to children and beginners and understand how they learn best.

Lessons take place online in an interactive virtual classroom using modern chess training tools such as shared boards, puzzles, and game analysis. This makes learning clear, engaging, and effective for both children and adult learners. I use a friendly, patient, and supportive approach, adapting each lesson to the student’s age, level, and goals. For juniors, sessions are structured and encouraging, helping build confidence and enjoyment. For adult beginners and improvers, lessons focus on practical understanding and steady improvement. All lessons are personalised, with guidance on what to practise between sessions so students can continue progressing independently.

As a PhD student, I honestly find it quite hard to find a level of understanding with a lot of people in educator roles, however much I want to learn from them, whereas I've always found Tristan easy to approach and talk to. I think knowing him and his attitude makes me aspire to learn more, in a way that's far less pressuring and unkind than my brain usually approaches growth. He's very down to earth and understanding of whatever place you're beginning from (and has the expertise to help you progress further than you thought possible). I can't really put it into words but he has the patience, knowledge and understanding that I think is invaluable for someone looking for a tutor.
Tristan is an experienced and natural tutor and his passion for chess and learning really comes across to his students, he is always oversubscribed for his school classes which says it all :)
I have known Tristan both professionally and personally for a number of years and can thoroughly recommend him as an excellent chess tutor. He is patient, encouraging, and genuinely enjoys seeing his students develop and grow. His passion for chess is clear, and he brings enthusiasm to all aspects of the game.
Tristan taught chess to a club of children in my school and the growing waitlist was a testament to quality of his teaching.
I was impressed by his dedication, always bringing multiple resources to lessons, enabling children of all abilities and ages to engage. The way he was able to teach using different styles encouraged participation from a variety of children and his club quickly became sought after with the waiting list rapidly growing.
The lessons taught a range of skills from absolute beginner level - where children were learning the real basics of the chess board and titles of pieces, to a more expert level - where competitive, strategic moves were encouraged as children learnt to compete against friends and put their knowledge to the test.
I highly recommend Tristan as a tutor. His skill, patience, and genuine passion for chess will inspire confidence and enthusiasm in a new generation of chess champions.I’ve known Tristan for around 10 years and would highly recommend him as a Chess tutor!
