Cliff uses an assortment of both academic and real-world material that he teaches to ensure a well-rounded education. He teaches concepts that are often overlooked in most traditional lessons. Cliff will teach you not only what to play and how to play it, but also how to practice efficiently so that you can keep improving long after you leave his mentorship.

Cliff can teach how to read, write, and interpret music as a language. He is able to focus on the fundamental aspects of drumming and take you step by step through processes he has used personally in order to reach the next level of musicality.

Most importantly, he can show you how to have fun as you learn!

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

I first developed a love for music from a very young age, as my parents were always music lovers. I fell in love with the drums around age 10, when my parents gifted me my first drum set.
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I can always listen to instrumental jazz from the 50s and 60s. Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, Charlie Parker, etc.
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

The most difficult thing I have shared with students is material relating to improvisation. Learning to play is one thing, but learning to play as if you are speaking to someone is another challenge entirely.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I don't think mastering any instrument is easy, and I don't even think it is possible to truly 'master' an instrument. There is always room to grow.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

The only keys to success are to never stop trying, and to keep an open mind/curiosity about your craft.
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Vinnie Colaiuta, Chick Corea, and Charlie Parker. All three are virtuosos of their instruments that inspired an entire generation. Unfortunately, two of them have passed.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I was once the replacement for someone who was certainly a better player than myself, but he could dress or act right for the gig. Skill is not everything. Presentation and personality are often just as important, if not more.
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I genuinely care about teaching others in a way that will help them far beyond their time with me. I strive to instill curiosity, discipline, and a general love for making art. I will never tell a student that my way is the only way.
