About Laura
I am passionate about tutoring because I have experienced the struggle of underachievement. I was that student from the very beginning of my education through my senior year. I know what it is like to be undervalued and told by counselors, "you are not college material." I started achievements after high school when I discovered I was good with computers and bookkeeping. I began talking classes in accounting and found my passion. Many years after I retired from business management. I went back to college for education. I was the Distinguish Graduate in 2017, gave the Commencement speech, on the Dean's list and graduated Summa Cum Laude.
Don't ever let anyone tell you what your not. Instead show them who you are!

I specialize in pre-K through 5th grade. I find most students are below grade level in reading and math. For reading I teach by using phonetics, decoding words, and awareness of sight words. I will determine the reading level each student has obtained and build from their foundation of already acquired knowledge.
In mathematics I use assessments to determine where each student is in all areas of elementary mathematics. I build from where each student is in every area. I have found if a student can't divide with confidence it's because one of the components needed to master this level of math are missing. We move forward by determining what is the problem area and strength the students knowledge in each area. Fractions give all of us a challenge, but I find with practice and perseverance fractions can also be mastered.
It takes a village to teach a child this is why I work with the parents, with the student's teachers, and any other support the student may have. I cannot tutor without the support of others that have information to successfully support the student's ability to advance in their education successfully.
