About Emily
My Philosophy -Whole Person Education:
I am a "person-first" educator. In my 15 years of classroom experience, I have learned that a student cannot effectively learn if they don’t first feel seen, heard, and supported. I prioritize building a genuine relationship with every student—establishing a foundation of trust and safety before we ever dive into the curriculum. When a student feels confident in their environment, their capacity for growth becomes limitless.
My Background & Expertise:
I have dedicated my career to understanding how different minds work and how to challenge them effectively. My academic journey has provided me with a robust toolkit for diverse learners:
Undergraduate Degree: Elementary & Middle School Science (Grades 1-9 focus).
Graduate Degree: Curriculum and Instruction.
Specialized Certification: Gifted and Talented Education (GT).
This background allows me to not only simplify complex topics for struggling learners but also to provide the "depth and complexity" required to keep gifted students engaged and thriving.
Why I Teach:
I truly love science! From the microscopic wonders of biology to the vast systems of our physical world, I find joy in the "aha!" moments when a difficult concept finally clicks. There is nothing more rewarding to me than watching a student’s posture change as their confusion turns into mastery. Whether I am helping a first-grader find their footing in reading or a high school senior navigate the intricacies of Advanced Biology, my goal is the same: to inspire a lifelong love of learning.

MY TUTORING APPROACH & PHILOSOPHY
My Methodology: From "How" to "Why":
I believe that science shouldn't feel like a list of facts to memorize, but a story to uncover. My approach is personal, differentiated, and inquiry-based. I encourage students to know themselves as learners, I foster confidence, and help them ask "why" until the concept clicks. Whether we are discussing cellular respiration in 11th-grade Biology or basic addition in 2nd grade, I use active learning techniques and visual metaphors to ensure students aren't just reciting answers, but truly mastering the material through their own learning style.
A Typical 60-Minute Lesson:
(1) Welcome (5 minutes): Learning starts with knowing oneself and connection with an empathetic learning leader. We begin with a personal check-in on the student's holistic well-being.
(2) The "Bridge" (5 mins): We start with a quick review of the previous session to ensure foundational concepts are "sticky" before moving forward.
(3) The Core Concept (20-30 mins): We dive into the new material using high-quality visual aids, collaborative white-boarding, or breakdown of complex textbook diagrams.
(4) Guided Practice (15 mins): The student takes the lead. I provide "scaffolding" support as they work through the concept, gradually stepping back as their confidence grows.
(5) The "Wrap-Up" (5 mins): We summarize the "Big Ideas" of the day and set a clear objective for our next meeting.
What Sets Me Apart?:
Beyond my deep knowledge of Biology and the K-12 curriculum, I am a firm believer that Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is the foundation of academic success. I don’t just teach the subject; I mentor the student. I prioritize building a safe, low-pressure environment where mistakes are seen as data points for growth. By fostering a student's self-confidence and emotional resilience, I help them overcome "subject anxiety" and develop a true "growth mindset" that applies to every area of their life.
Who I Teach:
High School (Grades 9-12): Specialized support in Biology (Honors/Standard) and life sciences.
Middle School (Grades 6-8): General Science, Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science.
Elementary (Grades 1-5): All-subject support, with a focus on literacy, math foundations, and sparking a love for science.
Skill Building: Students looking to improve their study habits, organization, nervous system regulation, or test-taking strategies.
