About Maya
Hello! My name is Maya Viswa and I'm currently a Masters student at Columbia University studying Negotiation and Conflict Resolution. For a long time, I was stuck in a fixed mindset about my potential and I struggled with not believing in myself enough. I saw the negative effect this had on my performance and it was only in the last few years that I was lucky enough to receive the right guidance to change my mindset and realise my own strengths. Today, I am a strong believer that we all have something unique to bring to the table and I would hope to help you realise your own potential in whatever field we work on. With my extensive background in law, politics, theatre, public speaking and writing, I believe I have the skills and background to gain a deeper understanding of who you are, how you can strive in your given field and how best to coach you. I have a philosophy that it's not simply about teaching you as a student but it's about working and developing a relationship with you - I want to learn from you as much as I want to coach you.

I believe that each student has their own unique style of learning and I always plan to cater my teaching to what works best for each student. I think it's really important to take time before beginning any new session to understand my student better, understand their own perceptions of their strengths and weaknesses and establish a working relationship of mutual trust and understanding. I believe that a big reason students are not achieving their potential is because of their own perceptions of who they are and what they are able to achieve. I have been in such a position and am now a big believer in trying to change the mindsets of my students - from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. In terms of typical length of a lesson, it really varies based on the subject matter but I try not to let lessons go beyond 2 hours and make sure to take regular breaks in between to ensure that we are in a fresh and open state of mind at all times. In terms of my qualifications and experience as a tutor, I have had experience coaching theatre, public speaking, english literature, creative writing and english language from the ages of 7 to 18.
