I think when working with kids it's important that the lessons are individualized if possible, all brains work differently! I think outside the box to set my students up for success and not force school work on them that they hate. My lessons are often fun and upbeat, I provide as much support as the child needs and encourage independent work to build confidence.
Typically for any subject that I am teaching I begin my lesson with a "brain warm-up", which is normally something related to the subject that the students already know. The warm-up is normally done independently so that the students feel confident in that skill. Next I teach my lessons interactively, so rather than them listening to me the whole time they are able to engage and ask questions as we go.
