About Raminta

In my final year of university, I had a chance to work for a tutoring company called Tutor Doctor in Edinburgh where I taught school kids biology. My favourite aspect of this job was helping them to understand different biology concepts, proofreading their assignments and giving general comments for improvement.

My grandmother gave me an old book about the history of biology from the invention of the microscope until the discovery of penicillin, this book deeply impressed me and I decided that in my future I wanted to work in a lab as a biologist.

My love of biology increased as I studied on the IB programme because I had a chance to spend a large amount of time working in the lab, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Even though I loved biology, but studying it was pretty hard, so my mum hired me an amazing tutor who helped me to understand different concepts in biology.

I studied Cell Biology at the University of Edinburgh, and through my coursework in different subjects, I not only gained experience working in a lab environment and writing formal reports and essays but also learned to work in groups and conduct paper journals, Internet and library-based research. Finally, my degree taught me how to study more effectively, skills that I hope I can pass to you. I am currently PhD degree at the University of Glasgow. My project involves designing and building a synthetic salmon gut system (I know it sounds crazy, but hopefully after 4 years I will have a working mechanism). I love every aspect of biology (from learning names of DNA nucleotides to designing and performing experiments) and I hope I can pass this love to you.

Throughout my school years, I had a lot of tutors, so I hope I can combine their methods to help you to understand different problems and concepts in biology. I know that every student is different, so the first of my tutoring would be to analyse the students current abilities with either short test or a questioner to establish how familiar they are with varying components of the syllabus. During this stage I would also discuss with a student if there are any aspects of the syllabus that they want to go through together (something that they cannot understand or want more clarification on). After we have established student needs, student and me can set a few targets/goals to aim towards. Once goals are established, the real work can begin: we could start discussing preferred topics and I can start preparing a selection of questions for the upcoming sessions. My preferred style of tutoring would be to one session involving me explaining different concepts of the topics, followed by the a session where student is an active participant, working through the questions together (questions I have prepared in the meantime) as a team related to the previous lesson with me prompting the student then they are stuck. With this style of tutoring (making student an active participant), I hope I can encourage their learning and advance their understanding of different topics.

I can teach students at any level: from early years to Biology A-levels, GCSEs or IB. Hope us together can make biology learning easier and fun!
