About Winnie

Hello! My full name is Yunning Mao, but most people like to call me Winnie. I am a current Junior in high school in New York, and although I do not have an official teaching degree I do have some qualifications. I am a high achieving student in my high school and have received Summa Honor Roll for all three years of my high school education, but please do not be intimidated. My goal is to help other students, especially younger students to feel more confident in school, I hope that by aiding them in their school work, I can relieve stress, and if possible even help them to enjoy certain subject areas more. I’m especially passionate about biology and history (disclaimer: I’m quite proficient for a high schooler, but I’m not a PhD expert yet!). I’ve loved these subjects since elementary school, and I hope to share that enthusiasm with others — whether they’re struggling or just looking to deepen their understanding. About the lesson

I use a lecture-based but personalized teaching method, focusing on helping students review, relearn, or even preview content. My approach can include summarizing key points or diving deeper into topics, depending on what the student needs. Depending on the lesson, I will use prepared slides with notes and images, or diagrams (if applicable) for the student.
As a current high schooler, I understand the challenges many students face when learning and studying — especially when the material feels overwhelming or unclear. I have experience tutoring peers at my school and know that every student learns differently. Some benefit from structured reviews, while others may need a more casual, supportive partner to work through material together.
I aim not just to teach, but to help students build strong study habits and feel like they have someone who gets it — because I’ve recently been in their shoes.

My lessons mainly center around history and biology.
History: From elementary and middle school material all the way up to AP World and AP U.S. History
Biology: Middle school topics (I'm currently taking AP Biology)

Depending on the student's needs, I can also offer a one-time session with tips and tricks for the ACT, on which I recently scored a 34.
