About Shamira

My name is Shamira. I am a graduate of Creative Writing and English Literature and I have a passion for books! I enjoy reading widely from classics to modern fiction but my favourite author is Stephen King. I myself write a lot and I’m currently working on a few writing projects of my own, I write everything from poetry and children’s writing to fantasy and thrillers. I very much enjoy the process of being a writer and find that the creativity it brings to my life is something that I can share with others.

As a tutor at private tuition centre I learned a lot about working with young people between the ages of 4-14 years old. I assisted them in Maths and English work and monitored their progress as a tutor. This role was more than just a tutoring role but also a caregiver role, as the children were left under your supervision. This role really helped me develop skills in communicating affectively e.g. teaching a new method of maths or a new grammar rule to a student. I also learnt the ways in which I can be a flexible tutor for all ages and cater to different needs, there were many students with dyslexia, ADHD, Autism and underwent staff training to make sure that I was able to provide these students with the same level of support. I have also worked previously as a private tutor, tutoring GCSE and Secondary School students through friends and family, this was an enlightening experience into the world of tutoring and I became proficient at providing these individuals with the appropriate level of support. As a tutor, I like to prepare for a session before hand and see it as my responsibility to make sure that I am on the same page as my students, it was always key for me to have an in-depth understanding of what they’re doing in school and how they might be performing to support them in the correct way. Throughout the last two years I have completed different work experience placements at schools where I would assist the teachers and occasionally co-teach. I would mainly be in GCSE and Key Stage Three classes, and would sometimes work closely with one individual or with the whole class. I found that my experiences in schools have taught me a lot about the changes in the current national curriculum and how teachers are coping with these changes. As a tutor, I know the experience that I gained from working in schools is something I can utilise to support students in their studies.

My teaching methodology shapes around my students needs for example, if a student requires assistance on essay writing I will try to break down how to write an essay with them and create many drafts with them until they can perfect it. With students who are struggling with comprehension work and analysing texts, I often get them to do readings for me and then do book analysis together, improving on skills such as inferring and finding evidence from the text. I usually go for quite a creative approach as well such as asking students to do a free write or write about a specific object. I like to keep lessons fun and creative but centered around what the student requires from me.
