About Crystal

Hello! I'm an illustrator and tutor with a deep love for immersive art, interactive media, and games (especially narrative-based ones!) I have experience in comic work, game art, storyboarding, traditional media (pencils, pens, ink, watercolor, gouache) and digital media (digital painting, pixel art, and voxel art). I have a Bachelor of Design (illustration major, storytelling electives), a Diploma of Game Design and am a repeat art mentor at Level Her Up's game jams. I worked at a weekend school for over four years, where I taught classes aged 7-15, and currently run creative workshops for local libraries. I have over 9 years of tutoring experience and have been lucky to work with students of diverse ages, cultural backgrounds, and neurotypes. Whatever your ideas and goals, I look forward to meeting you and helping you complete them. I'm happy to work with solo students, a team working on a project together, or groups (my listed prices are for individual students, so please contact me for team/group situations).

About the lesson

Comic skills can be used for any sort of visual story (articles, graphic novels, narrative-based games). I'm able to cover any part of the comic creation pipeline you need (ideation, writing, storyboarding, feedback cycles, typography, drawing and design) in whichever style you prefer (manga, realism, figurative, etc).

Whether you're a writer hoping to create their own illustrations, an illustrator wanting to understanding storytelling, or someone with ideas, enthusiasm and no experience, I'd love to help you!

My focus is helping students not just learn skills, but actually finish projects and enjoy doing it. I'll create a pathway of milestones using your long-term goals that will adapt as needed while still keeping you on track. I check in regularly to make sure you're getting the most out of each lesson and have a student Discord you can join for support, feedback and fortnightly art jams or co-working.

You can expect to become a resilient, confident creative with a deep understanding of visual storytelling and a developed personal style. I prioritise student wellbeing and safety with a class environment centred around low-ego, curiosity and problem-solving.

Lessons are typically between 1-2 hours depending on your goals, preferences and learning style. I am happy to teach all ages and neurotypes.
