About Holden
Hi! I'm Holden, I live and work in Carlisle in Cumbria, and teach chess on the side! As a junior I played chess competitively, and eventually progressed to the England Team where I represented the squad many times. Chess has taken me all over the world, having played in Gibraltar, Bulgaria, Greece, the Netherlands, and India. I am a two time Cumbria County Champion (2024/2025) and understand the competitive side of the game. Outside of chess I enjoy climbing, walking and getting into the outdoors. Competitive player with experience in the UK chess scene. 5 years coaching experience with both children and adults. Lessons are typically done through lichess with a variety of training exercises. We will discuss goals, play training games, tactics training, analyse your own games, build calculation, plug weaknesses, and train intuition. Tailored 1hr Lessons to meet your goals: Beginner Focus (0-1000): - Piece movement - Opening basics - 'Must-Know' checkmates Intermediate Focus (1000-1500): - Building an opening repertoire - Deeper tactic training - Finding plans - Endgames Expert Focus (1600-2000): - Pawn structures - Advanced tactics - Positional chess - Strategy and calculation

I recommend Holden wholeheartedly to anybody wanting to improve their chess skills. No doubt there are plenty of excellent chess resources available at reasonable prices, but we didn’t want our pre-teen chess obsessed son spending too many hours online in the company of chess-bots. Holden provided excellent teaching, humor, perspective and mentorship - somebody for our son to look up to. A wonderfully decent, reliable and kind human being who we couldn’t rate any higher.
