About Oselu

I enjoy the process of knowledge transfer and it brings me joy when my students have started to grasp a concept that was challenging to them. I have extensive tutoring experience; I started tutoring Engineering Mechanics (Statics) in 2015 to year 1 industrial and mechanical engineering students. About my qualifications, I am a mechanical engineering technologist with a BTech (2016) from Nelson Mandela University. I graduated top of my class and had the best mechanical engineering design project (a two-wheeled cricket ball launcher). I recently completed my MSc in Computer Science from Wits University. My research was focused on using weak supervision for detecting advanced facial action units (fundamental actions of individual or groups of facial muscles). In short, a deep learning network was used to detect these units with weak data. Check out my YouTube Channel: @opendeltatech for posts on programming and mathematics.

About the lesson

My teaching methodology for each student: The first step is to understand my student, get to know what makes them tick and what does not. This will help me to create an environment where they are comfortable and open to learn. The second step is to build their confidence as this will motivate them to engage more with the subject at hand. The third step is to either improve their problem-solving skills or show them more efficient methods. I supplement my lessons with Dr. Barbara Oakley's course "Learning How to Learn: Powerful mental tools to help you master tough subjects" which is offered by McMaster University and University of California San Diego on the Coursera platform. Finally, I emphasize the importance of setting goals. At the first lesson, we discuss the grade they would like to achieve at the end of the current academic period. We strategize on what needs to be done to meet these goals. I ask them to write their goals down with all the actions they decided would ensure they meet these goals they set for themselves.
