About Garret
I am a computer programmer who comes from a research background. I obtained a bachelor's degree in Chemistry with honors from the University of North Dakota. After receiving my degree, I joined a research team that studies a specific (S-acylation) post-translational modification and how that influences the functionality of the Dopamine Transporter protein - a protein that is vital for certain processes in the brain. This work led to me becoming a published author in a well-known science journal in that area of research. I then started taking computer programming courses post-graduation at my alma mater and this led to me becoming a compute programmer. I worked professionally for a tech company for about 1.5 years. I am now in a software engineering boot camp where I am learning the most relevant technologies for web development. These include HTML, CSS, Javascript, React.js, Express, Node.js, and PostgreSQL. I want to solidify/master this content by giving tutoring lessons part-time.

My teaching approach is evolving, but it is one that emulates the Socratic method and is growth mindset-oriented. Instead of giving students the answers, I provide a set of questions that a student answers that will lead the student to the correct answer. By using the Socratic method, my assumptions/knowledge of the material is tested and students put in the work to obtain the correct answer, giving students a sense of ability and confidence to tackle the next problem. I believe that learning new things/skills boils down to a matter of repetitions - ie, having a growth mindset. Students will be encouraged to put in the work and reminded that their ability is a factor of time and commitment rather than innate talent.
