About Doug
I am Doug Thomas, a Franco-British composer, performer, producer, and educator based in London.
I studied Music Performance at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP) in London, and for the past decade have worked as a professional musician, composer, and producer. In 2015, I founded NOOX (North of Oxford St.), an independent record label and creative platform dedicated to contemporary classical, jazz, folk, and ambient music. Through NOOX, I've composed, recorded, produced, and collaborated with artists from around the world, developing a broad perspective on composition, improvisation, and artistic identity.
My lessons are aimed at intermediate and advanced musicians who want to move beyond technique and develop a personal musical voice. I teach composition, improvisation, creative process, musical expression, and musicianship across genres, helping students understand not just what to play, but why they play it.
Rather than focusing on formulas or imitation, I encourage students to build an individual artistic language by drawing from a wide range of musical traditions, developing their listening skills, expanding their creative vocabulary, and learning to trust their musical instincts. Whether you're a composer looking for fresh ideas, an improviser seeking greater freedom, or a performer wanting to deepen your musical expression, lessons are tailored to your goals and artistic interests.
My work extends beyond music into photography, writing, and visual arts, and I believe creativity thrives when we connect ideas across disciplines. My aim is to help students become more curious, confident, and independent artists—not simply better musicians.

My lessons are centred on helping musicians develop an authentic artistic voice rather than simply acquiring new techniques. While technical proficiency is important, I believe the most meaningful progress comes from understanding how music works, learning to listen deeply, and discovering your own creative instincts.
Each lesson is tailored to the student's goals and musical background. Depending on your interests, we may explore composition, improvisation, songwriting, musical form, harmony, rhythm, arranging, creative process, listening strategies, or ways to overcome creative blocks. I often draw on examples from classical, jazz, folk, rock and contemporary music, encouraging connections across genres instead of limiting students to one tradition.
Lessons typically last 60 minutes and combine discussion, analysis, practical exercises, and creative work. Between sessions, I may suggest listening, compositional studies, or improvisation exercises to continue developing your ideas independently.
I studied Music Performance at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP) in London and have spent over a decade composing, recording, producing, and collaborating with artists through my independent label, NOOX. My experience as a composer, producer, performer, and creative director allows me to offer guidance that balances artistic vision with practical musicianship.
My lessons are best suited to intermediate and advanced musicians, composers, songwriters, and improvisers who want to deepen their creativity, refine their musical language, and develop a distinctive artistic identity. Whether you're preparing a project, exploring new creative directions, or looking to break out of familiar habits, I aim to provide a supportive and thought-provoking environment that helps you grow as an independent artist.
