I approach any given topic by communicating the subject matter at a conceptual level first to my students (i.e why we are learning what we are learning). From that, I like to dwell in the details. This provides students with a high level understanding of the subject matter which in turn enables them to understand the details of the subject matter and also assists them better to retain that information.
