About Shakira

Hi! Part of why I think I’d be the right tutor for you is because I’ve always had a love for language! I was reading at a college level when I was 8, and I was placed in the gifted program early on because of my reading and writing skills. I’ve been drawn to stories, essays, and big ideas ever since, but what I really care about is helping things click for other people. I definitely know my way around an essay, and I can't wait for you to be as confident! I'm super patient and love breaking down complex ideas into super simple steps. I never think anyone is dumb or inherently bad at anything, they just haven't found the right system. I've struggled with ADHD and anxiety (especially test anxiety!!) myself, and I want to show others that it never has to be as difficult as it seems. My students say I'm down to earth and inviting, and I can't wait to make English your new favorite class (or, at least, make you hate it less)!

About the lesson

My lessons can take any kind of shape depending on what your needs are ! Whether we’re working on an essay, trying to understand a reading, or prepping for a test, I can break down topics simply and help students feel less overwhelmed. Lessons are flexible and collaborative and an environment where we can talk through ideas, write together, or make difficult topics make more sense.

My students are in varying stages of education and we focus on writing, reading, literature, or test prep. I’m especially good at helping with anxious moments like writer’s block or test panic, especially because I’ve been there myself. I work really well with students who have ADHD, anxiety, or just feel stuck and need someone patient to walk through it with them, and try to be a teacher I wish I had. Every session ends with a plan, a few wins, and hopefully a little more clarity than before !

A typical session usually starts with a quick check in to see what’s on your plate and what you want to focus on. Then we jump into the main work, whether that’s brainstorming ideas, reading through a passage, editing a draft, or practicing test questions together. I’m there the whole time to guide, explain, and keep things understandable. We finish by summarizing what we covered, making a clear plan for next steps, and celebrating any progress, no matter how small ! Of course, lessons are structured based on what you need, so if you just need a study buddy by your side, I can be that ! Flexibility is key, so we adjust the pace and focus as needed to make sure you’re comfortable and confident throughout.
