About Amber
I teach because I have witnessed the transformative power of dance within my own life, and I can only hope to foster this type of relationship with dance within the lives of my students. I believe that dance allows us to say things that words cannot, and by introducing dance into the lives of as many individuals as possible, we are able to begin to use it as a means of dialogue. I am interested in what dance can teach you about oneself and the way one exists within something greater than oneself.
I value difference and multiplicity of perspective and think both can be used to promote individual and collective growth. I fully acknowledge that the perspective from which I teach is not the only approach to movement. Further, I believe that each and every student brings new thoughts and ideas to a space; providing students with the opportunity to share these thoughts often allows for both a building of self-confidence and a fostering of community interchange that can be unifying and, when necessary, constructive.
Moreover, I want to offer a space that my dancers feel they can enter without having to change anything about their being. The way they exist, individually, outside of my classroom is just as important to me as the way they exist, individually, within it, mentally, physically, and emotionally. Although we are dancers, we are humans dancing. Dance and life are not distinct; they are inextricably tied and grounded in humanity. I truly believe that we can only use dance as release if we are willing to carry our own baggage with us into each lesson; it is my hope that my students know this before leaving my lessons.

I teach dance technique with an anatomic emphasis that informs students of the anatomy behind the movements that they are learning, and, then, supports them as they explore the movements within their own bodies. I feel that if my students are able to understand the workings of their own body, they will be able to safely push their body to the limits of these workings.
I always remind my students that I learn as much from them in our time together as they learn from me; although I hold a position as their teacher, I make it known that I am learning alongside them. I aim to teach in a way that breaks the hierarchical structure of a traditional dance classroom. I believe in the agency of my students. I foster their power through inviting them to verbally communicate with me during lessons as well as through opportunities to engage with technique in a way that makes sense in their own brains and bodies. This is often cultivated in my lessons through improvisational exercises or through cues relating to artistry or musicality.
My lessons range from beginner to advanced. I am willing to work with students who are just beginning to use dance as a recreational activity, those who are looking to strengthen their technique in preparation for a professional dance career, and anyone and everyone in between.
