About Nigel
I took my first French class ten years ago, and have not stopped studying this beautiful and silly language since. I have studied abroad in Martinique and in Paris, and have a degree in French from Oberlin College, where I spent eight semesters honing my grammar and vocabulary, helping peers with homework, as well as translating the poems of Haitian writer Jacques Roumain.

My grandmother once wrote: "Speech is such a naked, telling thing. When I'm called on in a language class I feel like a peeled grape." I believe every non-native French speaker knows this anxiety, and I am prepared to meet you wherever you are on your path to overcoming it. A good tutor can not only teach their material, but also help their clients to become more confident students in their own classes. To that end, I will always encourage questions and uncertainty, and mold my approach — the language we speak, the exercises we do, etc. — to your needs.
My lessons are intended as a supplement to an outside, beginner- to intermediate-level class, and can revolve around homework, test prep, writing/speaking, reading comprehension, or any other facet of your curriculum.

As a Lecturer in the French Department at Oberlin College, it is my pleasure to write this recommendation for Nigel Law. I have known Nigel during his Senior year, when he took two upper level courses with me. During that time, I got to know him as a kind and responsible person with an excellent level of French. He always came to class prepared to engage in discussion on reading assignments. All of his written works have always been diligently written, showing an excellent grasp of French grammar and idiomatic expressions. He is able to effectively read and analyze complex ideas in French, he organized and communicated his thoughts clearly in the target language. Hence, I believe Nigel to be a dependable tutor who can help learners at different levels; from beginners who are discovering a new language, to more advanced learners who are looking for someone to help them hone their writing style. He will also be able to help with pronunciation activities, having a very good accent and excellent oral skills.
Nigel has a pleasant personality. He is friendly and easy to talk to. In my class he has always worked well with his peers, is willing to share his ideas and to listen to others and is respectful of others’ opinions. Based on my interactions with him and what I have witnessed in my courses, I am confident that he will provide his tutees with a comfortable learning environment, while being attentive to their questions and learning process.
Nigel’s passion and knowledge for French language and Francophone culture is evident. Culture is an intrinsic part in language learning. Having spent time in homestays both in France and Martinique, Nigel has had the opportunity to be immersed in Francophone culture. During the Fall semester 2019, the French Department at Oberlin invited students to share their study abroad experience with potential French majors. I appreciated how candidly Nigel spoke about his study-abroad experience, noting both the challenges, but also the rewards of being immersed in another culture. He clearly showed his enthusiasm and the enrichment of studying another language, something I am sure he will communicate with his students.
I have no doubt that Nigel will be an excellent tutor who will be able to help learners at all level. With his ability to explain things clearly, his passion for French language and Francophone cultures, and his patient and compassionate personality, I believe Nigel will definitely add to anyone’s enjoyment of the French language. I highly recommend him.

Lecturer, Oberlin College
Department of French and ItalianNigel Law is an exquisite tutor. My senior year of high school he tutored me in calculus, a class I was intimated by. But with his tutoring help I grew more and more confident in what I was learning and the work I was doing. Nigel is a patient, kind, and encouraging tutor. He had a good sense for when to challenge me, when to explain something to me, and when to let me take a break if I was getting frustrated. One thing I especially appreciated about Nigel is that he had a good sense of humor. This made tutoring sessions fun, rather than monotonous. I’m grateful that I had Nigel as my tutor and would highly recommend him to a friend.
