About Jen

My tutoring specialty is STEM and writing. My strengths are in biology and chemistry. I have previous experience tutoring both high school and college students. I have several years of professional experience as a technical trainer/mentor for research technicians in biomedical research and over 10 years as a veterinary technician (medical terminology struggles?... I got you!). I am a strong writer and can assist in several styles from creative to scientific writing.

While I have very diverse academic and professional experiences on a rather long resume, it is more important that you know some more personal details. In high school and the beginning of my college career, I struggled quite a bit. I was not a strong student due to a mismanaged learning disability. But through guidance of peers, mentors, and hard work I began to excel at school. Earning my masters degree with distinction (maintaining a 4.0 GPA) was one of my greatest achievements. I tell you this because I know what it is like to be on both sides of tutoring, as a struggling student and as the mentor. I can relate to my students on many levels. My goal is to not only help you improve your marks in school, but to also help you become a better, more confident student on your terms!

About the lesson

My preferred method of tutoring is to develop a game plan to reach the students goals based on the individuals style of learning. I typically start with a conversation to discuss study habits that have worked or didn't work for the individual student. Are you a visual learner? Do you prefer the "give it to me straight method"? Do you prefer to make it fun with games? In most cases, I will try to use multi-modal approach to ensure a full understanding of concepts. If a straight lecture approach worked, it's likely you wouldn't need the tutoring services. As I am not a college professor teaching a class of 50+ students at once, I have the luxury of being flexible to the individual students needs! Let's start with a conversation to discuss what your goals are and what methods might work best to ensure you don't just ace the test, but actually understand the material!
