As a teacher of Indian classical flute, my focus is on building a strong foundation while nurturing creativity and self-expression. I believe that learning music is not only about mastering techniques but also about developing discipline, patience, and a deep emotional connection with sound. 1. Foundation First I start by introducing students to the basics – proper posture, breath control, finger placement, and producing a pure note. Just like in classical tradition, I emphasize swaras (notes), alankars (patterns), and long notes to strengthen breath and tone. 2. Step-by-Step Progression I guide students gradually from simple exercises to raag sadhana. I make sure they understand the aaroh-avroh, pakad, and emotional essence of each raag before moving toward improvisation. 3. Traditional with Modern Touch While I follow the guru-shishya parampara (traditional method of teaching), I also use recordings, notations, and demonstrations to make learning easier in today’s context. 4. Encouraging Expression I encourage students to feel the music, not just play it. Improvisation, understanding of raag-rasa (mood), and connecting with the soul of music are key parts of my teaching. 5. Sharing Knowledge I demonstrate each lesson on the flute so students can see and hear the technique clearly. I use repetition and gradual correction, ensuring students practice with discipline. I share stories, history, and the spiritual significance of ragas to connect them with the tradition. I motivate them to listen to great maestros, attend concerts, and practice regularly to absorb the nuances.
