About Áilill
My teaching style focusses on developing critical thinking, imaginative analysis, and clear verbal reasoning. I bring three years’ experience working at the European Youth Parliament as a debate coach and judge, where I trained participants in public speaking and selected candidates for progression to national conferences. Since receiving my TEFL qualification (168 Hours) in 2020, I have taught over 1,000 hours of academic and professional English to young people and business professionals. My students, many of whom stay with me for more than three years, have included technology executives, senior professionals, and graduate students at leading institutions, including Harvard Law School.
I am a current graduate student at the University of Oxford studying History and Critical Theory, with a focus on Women’s Studies. I am also Clarendon Scholar, which is awarded based on interview performance and acaemic merit to approximately 0.01% of graduate applicants to Oxford. I previously completed my undergraduate degree in History and Political Science at Trinity College Dublin, graduating with First Class Honours. I placed in the top 1% of students at Trinity after receiving the Foundation Scholarship, regarded as Ireland's most prestigious undergraduate award. Although I chose to remain in Ireland for my undergraduate studies, I was offered places at the University of Edinburgh and the London School of Economics. My academic history has enabled me to help younger students write successful applications to the University of Cambridge, Trinity College Dublin, and Harvard Law School.
Additionally, my experience includes working annually as a Teaching Assistant for Ireland’s most academically-gifted adolescents. In this role, I support students in the top 95th percentile of verbal and numerical reasoning ability, many of whom have specific educational requirements corresponding to ASD, ADHD, and SEMH. I have also previously been a Camp Director at an international language programme, where I managed classrooms of children under twelve years of age and was responsible for student safety. In 2024, I was selected as a delegate to the European Forum Alpbach after ranking in the top 4% of applicants based on my personal statement and interview performance. Separately, I have represented Ireland at the European Youth Parliament and ranked among the top five debating candidates nation-wide from a cohort of over 500. I draw from extensive experience in both my own academic journey and the opportunies I have had to teach others.
I am fully DBS certified.

**My Teaching Style**
I typically approach tutoring by engaging directly with students’ work. After an introductory discussion in which I assess the student’s needs, I proceed by developing their skills at the level of writing and focused analysis. Across my teaching experience, I have found it most valuable to engage a Socratic method in which the student is encouraged to read their work with a critical eye and become adept at identifying the strengths and weaknesses of any written text or verbal argument. This allows students to achieve progress through a process of strategic questioning and demonstration that does not simply showcase the appearance of advanced writing but enables them to understand why such writing is advanced and how they can achieve a similar quality across all academic assignments. Specifically, I work with students to develop their adaptability of thought, clarity of oral and written communication, precision of analysis, and critical imagination. I take a holistic approach that develops key skills for exam performance, essay assignments, seminar discussions, and Oxbridge interviews.
This approach is not only academically productive but encourages the learner to develop an independent sense of confidence. First and foremost, I believe in a communication style that is clear but gentle. I make it a priority that students feel affirmed, challenged, and respected. This is all the more important because tutoring adolescents and young people can have an outsized impact on their senses of self and the goals to which they aspire. My six years of teaching has allowed me to work with a range of ages and abilities, from young children to senior business professionals and students who present signs of ASD, ADHD, and SEMH. I have also worked with people of many nationalities and am sensitive to both cultural contexts and varied academic requirements.

Ailill gave me history grinds during the leaving cert (Ireland) which helped me get into film school. Thanks a million.
I know Ailill through a mutual friend. He was two years above me at Trinity and gave me several months’ lessons in essay structure and research. It’s improved my grade average from 2:1 to 1:1.
Áilill was super helpful when it came to walking me through the entire Trinity application process. He assisted me in my personal essay and gave me a perspective on TCD that only a past student could do.
Áilill was extremely helpful in helping me improve my writing, especially in pursuance of admission to Harvard Law School. Now at Harvard, the value of the hours Áilill spent with me is tangible. I have had the privilege of learning from the world's leading legal scholars. Writing essays used to be an extremely stressful ordeal for me but now I write essays with ease. Áilill truly is a wordsmith, but also a kind and patient teacher.
I came to Aillil when I was applying for colleges after my year out. I wasn’t sure what was a good fit for me and I knew I wanted to aim high for a degree I’d be passionate about. After a good conversation (he’s a great listener!) and thorough planning, we submitted an application to the Trinity College Dublin - Columbia Dual BA program. Aillil helped coach me for my interview, and when I got my decision letter he was the first person I told! I’m delighted to have had his help, and would recommend him to anyone aiming high and looking to make their dreams a reality.
