  • When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

It actually goes back to when I was just four years old. My grandfather was the one who sat me down and showed me how the pieces move. It wasn’t long before it became more than just a game. By the time I started school at six, I was already training seriously under Vladimir Karpov. He was a Master of Sport and an incredible mentor who really laid the groundwork for everything I do today. I spent my youth in local tournaments, but the real shift happened during my university years when I started competing internationally.
  • Which artists or works affect you the most?

I’ve always felt that chess is as much an art form as it is a sport. I’m deeply inspired by Pokras Lampas and his "Calligrafuturism." There’s something about the way he bridges Eastern and Western aesthetics that reminds me of the bridge between logic and intuition in a chess game. I’m also drawn to Salvador Dalí. Surrealism teaches you to challenge what you see at first glance, which is exactly what you have to do on the board—look for the unconventional solution that your opponent hasn't even considered.
  • What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?

Talent is a start, but I’ll take discipline over motivation any day. Motivation is great for getting you to the board, but it’s discipline that keeps you there for the "10,000 hours" it takes to reach mastery. In my book, success comes down to three things: perseverance, resourcefulness, and that boring, everyday discipline. There are no shortcuts to deliberate practice.
  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

I usually suggest three things that help me personally. First, find the right music; it sets the tempo for your brain to go deep. Second, get outside. There’s no better way to reset a cluttered mind than connecting with nature. And third, go to a museum. Don't just look at the paintings—try to see the stories and the effort behind them. That kind of narrative depth is something you can pull into any craft, including chess.
  • How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

For me, chess is the ultimate mastery of information. It’s one of the few places in life where luck doesn't play a role; it’s just a pure battle of wits. You either outsmart the person sitting across from you, or you walk away with a lesson. Every game feels like living a whole new lifetime within those squares.
  • What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

Becoming a FIDE Master and a professional coach were huge steps for me. In terms of competition, winning the Dubai Blitz Championship and my titles in Da Nang stand out. But honestly, "achievement" for me has become more about the longevity and the ability to turn my passion into a professional path that helps others.
  • Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

That’s actually the most rewarding part of my life right now. I’ve had students who came to me and then just rocketed past the 2,000-rating mark in what felt like record time. Seeing a 9-year-old student win the Texas State Championship or a 10-year-old take the Canadian Championship—that’s incredible. It’s a reminder that with the right guidance, the next generation can push the boundaries even further than we did.
  • Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

I’ll let you in on a secret: I wasn’t born a "super-professional." My only real trick is an obsession with hard work and a habit of finding inspiration in the mundane. To stay sharp and keep my ego in check, I paint and build LEGO Technic sets. There’s something therapeutic about creating something physical and tangible. It recharges my confidence so that when I go back to the abstract world of chess, I’m seeing everything with fresh eyes.
